After Mid-October, Where You Eat in Duck Depends on the Day of the Week

On a Monday night in late October, which Duck kitchens still have the lights on? Through summer, nobody here had to think about it. Most places served every night, and the planning was about wait times. That changes over the next two weeks. Duck's restaurants don't close together. They switch to off-season schedules on different dates, and those schedules open on different days. By November, "is it open?" depends mostly on which weekday you pick.

Theodosia's posted schedule runs out first

The first change is at The Sanderling. Theodosia, Vivian Howard's restaurant at 1461 Duck Road, took over the space that used to be Kimball's Kitchen. It opened on May 22, 2025, as a 64-seat dining room, as Outer Banks This Week reported at the time, with cocktails by local mixologist Matt Joyner. Its second season began May 8, 2026, with Charlotte Coman as chef de cuisine alongside Howard.

The restaurant's current hours show the shoulder schedule. After Labor Day, dinner runs Wednesday through Saturday "through mid-October." The same section also lists "Daily: 5:00pm-9:00pm," which looks like the regular in-season schedule. The page doesn't print a final date or say what follows mid-October. Today is October 7, so roughly one week of the posted Wednesday-through-Saturday dinners is left. The page calls reservations "highly" suggested and says walk-in seating is very limited, offered only early or late in the evening. If a Theodosia dinner is on your fall list, call The Sanderling now to ask about dates after mid-October.

October 21 is when the weekly schedule changes

AQUA has been on the sound since 2008 and describes itself as a year-round restaurant, so it isn't closing for the season. It is changing its days. The homepage currently lists dinner nightly from 4 p.m., the bar opening at 3 p.m. with a light menu, and live music from 5 to 8. Under that is the notice that matters for the rest of the fall: "Starting OCT 21," AQUA opens Wednesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner. October 21, 2026 is a Wednesday. After that, AQUA's posted schedule doesn't include Monday or Tuesday.

The trade is fewer nights and more daytime service. Lunch is part of the new schedule, so a weekday lunch on the water becomes possible exactly when the boardwalk empties out.

A few other restaurants have already changed or are changing soon:

  • NC Coast Grill & Bar says seating was first come, first served "until October 1st," and it is now taking reservations for "our off season." The homepage doesn't list the off-season days or hours.
  • Coastal Cantina, at 1236 Duck Road in the Waterfront Shops, lists its season as April through October and its hours as 11 a.m. to sunset. It doesn't name a closing day.
  • Lucky Duck Ice Cream, at 1190 Duck Road, Suite S-1, is new this year. It opened as a partnership between BLVD Ice Cream Co. and Corolla Scoops & Sweets, with noon-to-10 p.m. hours planned daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. As of its October 5, 2026 update, it's open 2 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday through Sunday, and closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Lucky Duck's schedule makes the point clearly. Its closed days are Wednesday and Thursday. AQUA's will be Monday and Tuesday. Each business is cutting different nights.

The week, according to what each place has posted

Here is a map of the late-October week built from each business's own posted hours. Most of these pages don't print a year or say whether the hours carry into winter, so treat the table as a starting point and call before you go.

Day Posted as open
Monday Lucky Duck, Duck's Cottage, Lifesaving Station, Duck Deli
Tuesday The Blue Point, Lucky Duck, Duck's Cottage, Lifesaving Station, Duck Deli
Wednesday AQUA, The Blue Point, Duck's Cottage, Lifesaving Station, Duck Deli
Thursday AQUA, The Blue Point, Duck's Cottage, Lifesaving Station, Duck Deli
Friday AQUA, The Blue Point, Lucky Duck, Duck's Cottage, Lifesaving Station, Duck Deli
Saturday AQUA, The Blue Point, Lucky Duck, Duck's Cottage, Lifesaving Station, Duck Deli
Sunday AQUA, Lucky Duck, Duck's Cottage until noon, Lifesaving Station, Duck Deli

Where each row comes from: The Blue Point lists dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 4:30 to 8:30, and its BackBar Tuesday through Saturday from 4:00 to 8:30. The page doesn't print a year or say whether those hours change seasonally. Duck Deli's site lists breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with no season attached. This summer the deli also added the 5 O'Clock Bar, an outdoor area with six taps of local beer, cocktails, wine, frequent live music, and barbecue, according to Outer Banks This Week's July 28, 2026 roundup of new restaurants. None of the sources say whether the bar runs through the fall. Sunset Grille & Raw Bar says it's "open daily," but it describes lunch and dinner as in-season and confirms only weekend breakfast. Because its off-season pattern isn't spelled out, it isn't in the table.

According to these posted schedules, the two named sit-down dinner rooms on the sound, AQUA and The Blue Point, overlap from Wednesday through Saturday. On Monday, neither lists service. On Sunday, only AQUA does. The Sanderling's Lifesaving Station and Duck Deli both post breakfast, lunch, and dinner for all seven days. Of the two, only the Lifesaving Station has published dated off-season hours.

The kitchens that cover the gaps

Two places in Duck post schedules that barely change with the season, and both are in older buildings with a history here.

Duck's Cottage Coffee & Books says it "strives to be open 363 days a year notwithstanding ice storms, hurricanes, global pandemics and staff shortages." It opens at 7 a.m. seven days a week in its 1920s-era building on the edge of the pond at the south end of the Duck Waterfront Shops, 1240 Duck Road. A banner on the site currently says it's closing at noon on Sundays, and the shop asks people to call 252-261-5510 to confirm the day's hours.

The Lifesaving Station at The Sanderling lists breakfast from 7 to 11:30 a.m., lunch from noon to 4:30 p.m., and dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. It has also posted 2026 holiday hours, the clearest written commitment to off-season service anywhere in town:

  1. Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26. Breakfast 7 to 11 a.m., à la carte. Thanksgiving lunch or dinner from noon to 7 p.m.
  2. Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24. Breakfast 7 to 11 a.m., lunch noon to 4 p.m., dinner 5 to 9 p.m.
  3. Christmas Day, Friday, December 25. Breakfast 7 to 11 a.m., lunch noon to 4 p.m., dinner 5 to 9 p.m.

Christmas Eve falls on a Thursday, and that matters for your plans. On a Thursday, Lucky Duck's posted schedule has it closed. AQUA's posted Wednesday-through-Sunday schedule would include that night, but a business's own holiday plans can override its regular days, so call to confirm.

The October dates already set

The changeover also brings a short run of dated food events. Each one falls on a night or at a venue that's still operating after the switch.

  • Saturday and Sunday, October 10–11: Duck Jazz Festival. The Town of Duck's event page says food and soft drinks will be sold by Duck eateries on Sunday, October 11. It's also the last weekend inside Theodosia's posted shoulder schedule.
  • Thursday, October 15, 6 p.m.: "A Novel Supper with author Carla Vass." Duck's Cottage and The Sanderling are co-hosting this multi-course dinner at the Lifesaving Station. Details are on Duck's Cottage's event page.
  • Thursday, October 29, 6 to 9 p.m.: "Super Heroes in Pink." NC Coast Grill & Bar is hosting a chef-curated, five-course fundraiser dinner.

Two of these three dinners are on Thursdays and one is at the Lifesaving Station, which matches the pattern in the table. As the off-season sets in, Duck's planned food events are landing at the venues and on the nights that stay busy.

The dates that are fixed on Duck's dining calendar are these. Theodosia's posted Wednesday-through-Saturday dinners run through mid-October, AQUA's Wednesday-through-Sunday schedule starts October 21, and the Lifesaving Station has posted its Thanksgiving hours for November 26.
